sacred movementsEven though the dances are beautiful and charismatic, it is not esthetics and beauty that are mesmerizing about them, and it is not actually the beauty of the dances that participants speak about after experiencing them. It is something behind the visible movement, an inner state that is reflected through a particular quality of presence on the face of the dancers. It is their aliveness, their attention, their wakefullness. Many speak of a dance "technique" which involves obviously not just the body, but the whole of the being, the whole of the consciousness, in fact more of the consciousness than may ever have been experienced before.

 

In the Sacred Dances structures, or workshops, a dance is not created, rather dancers are created through it.

 

The participants are animated by forces inherent in the movements themselves, by a new substance. Each outer movement is just the "tip of the iceberg," inner forms are laid within the outer forms, a living path. These inner forms have to do with the morphogenetic field of the individual, the pattern of life force which he /she is tapping in order to incarnate, move, indviduate, and flower. How could Gurdjieff capture this essence in movements, in a technique, a structure? That was, or rather IS his genius, for those techniques in the hands of one who knows, a teacher who has mastered this transmission still contain that reality, that force, that silence, that miracle.
